Don’t Miss Crested Butte’s 4th of July Celebration!
If you’ve ever wanted to immerse yourself into the picture-perfect American experience, visit the town of Crested Butte on the 4th of July. The town is host to the quintessential, Americana 4th of July celebration. From sunrise to past sundown, abundant festivities fill up the day.
To start off the day, the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab hosts the annual Gothic to Crested Butte 1/3 Marathon. The race begins in the gorgeous mining town of Gothic, CO and ends 8.56 miles later on Elk Avenue. The scenery along the race course is breathtaking, and the race is a great way to start the day!
If you’re not the running type, head down to the Crested Butte Fire Station for the annual pancake breakfast. The cost for breakfast is a fundraiser for the Fallen Firefighter Fund which supports the volunteers, and/or their families, in the event of injury, illness or other disaster.
The highlight of the day is the 4th of July parade. It begins at 11:00 and is not to be missed! The parade includes some old-fashioned mountain men and women marching down Elk Avenue along with Gothic residents dressed in skunkweed, and there are always some crazy and quirky floats to get the party started.
Immediately following the parade, kids and grown-ups are invited to head down to 1st Street and Elk Avenue to participate in the enormous water fight that gets started with the local firefighters’ hoses.
After the parade, head to 3rd and Elk Avenue to visit the food court or grab some food at one of the local restaurants. There is live music to be enjoyed across from the food court as well. Elk Avenue turns into one big party!
Head up to Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s base area in the evening for more live music and the fireworks display! The resort serves food and drinks on the lawn followed by a free concert. This year’s (2019) performer is Panda and People, and the music begins at 7:30. The fireworks will begin once the sky is dark enough – usually around 9:30.
Crested Butte offers up a full day of fun for the 4th of July. The weather is almost always perfect, and the mountains offer an amazing backdrop to the day’s activities. For a more detailed outline of the days festivities, visit the Chamber of Commerce’s website.
