Is Crested Butte’s Local Lifestyle For You?
What is life like living in the small ski town of Crested Butte? It’s amazing. Not only do you get to look at beautiful scenery, but you get to take part in activities every day that others pay thousands of dollars to do in one trip. If you are an avid skier, mountain biker, hiker or lover of any outdoor activity, then this is the place for you.
I’ve lived here for over 27 years, and I’ve noticed a thing or two about why people come to our town, fall in love with it and are determined to make it their permanent or semi-permanent home. Maybe you grew up watching ski movies. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a part of a small, close-knit community that rallies behind a friend in need. Maybe you just want a more laid back, relaxed life. Whatever the reason, once you are here, your daily life is surpassed by none.
Of course, there is work to be done and bills to be paid; however, many people are lucky enough to find adventurous employment. You can be a guide and show people how to mountain bike, backcountry ski, fly fish, etc. There is plenty of indoor work available which might be a nice option if you are a fair-weather sort of person. Added bonus – no traffic jams other than the seasonal cow migration through town!
For most locals, the best part is the outdoor lifestyle. You’ll notice the 9-5 workers hopping on their bikes to squeeze in some exercise right after work. Some businesses will completely shut down for a few hours to ski on a powder day. Many people love to work nights at restaurants so they have time to play during the day. It’s great getting to ski without lift lines on a weekday.
The weekends are the perfect time to get together with friends. Go for a mountain bike ride and then have a beer on one of Elk Avenue’s sunny decks. There is usually live music to be found somewhere in town on the weekends. Gather with friends, maybe for a potluck.
I think it’s fair to say that people living in Crested Butte live life to its fullest. Priorities have shifted over the years and more are realizing the importance of work/life balance. Hopefully, you see why the Crested Butte lifestyle is so enticing and can experience it for yourself.
